How it works
Basic Music Theory can take up to 2 weeks or 30 days to complete, depending on the timetable established with a student. It includes 5 individual sessions (60 minutes each), as well as practical assignments which usually take up 2-5 hours to complete. All of our sessions are recorded with screen capture software and provided for student's private use, in order to further establish the concepts and practical technics reviewed in the course.
Curriculum
All of the sessions will be held in the DAW of your choice: Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, Cubase, Bitwig, Studio One. If you are just starting out we will help you choose your first DAW on our free 30 minutes interview call.

Learning the notes and the logic behind them. Sharps and flats, half-steps and whole-steps. What is a tonic? How to find and form a key? Understanding major and minor.

What is a melody? Importance of rhythmic accents, repetition and form. Analysing famous works. Melodic intervals: their names, character and function.

What is a harmony? Harmonic intervals: their names, character and function. Consonance and dissonance. Types of chords, inversions and ways to form them. Basics of voice-leading.

Functional harmony: relations and functions of chords. Typical chord patterns and substitutions. Ways of enriching harmony. Parallel and relative keys. Exotic modulations.

Ways to combine melody and harmony. Understanding the Circle of Fifths/Fourths. MIDI editors, helpful VST plugins and tools inside your DAW.

Since all of our courses are 1-on-1 meetings, we always try to tailor these lessons to your experience and needs. If some part of the course is already familiar to you— we are willling to substitute them with more advanced concepts from another course.

FAQ: Basic Music Theory
All you need for making music is a laptop (the more powerful - the better) and a pair of studio monitors or/and headphones. If you are only just starting out there is really no need for purchasing professional-grade hardware as you probably won't even know what to do with it yet. Best to start small and slowly build your workspace, looking for specific things that can help facilitate your music making process in the future.

The class schedule is compiled individually for each student, which lets you plan your studies at a convenient time. We recommend taking classes at least once, maybe twice a week, focusing more instead on doing lots of practice in your spare time.

If you have never studied music, played any instrument or even taken dance classes - no worries. You will get all the basics you need in the course and we will even adapt it to your preferences and music genres.
